Lawrence Dumps Shaw of Orestes and 50 other landowners and voters of Monroe Township have filed a petition with the Auditor of Madison County for construction of three miles of cement road from West Washington Street where the brick paving ends to Orestes. The petition asks for the roadway to be widened to thirty-two feet and that heavy traffic makes it necessary to make the improvements.

A fierce tornado smashed Orestes leaving death and destruction in a wide path reaching Wheeling north of Muncie. Dead is Charles Ludlow of Orestes and Richard Goodman and his housekeeper southeast of Summitville. Scores were badly injured and Orestes lay in ruins with the silo factory, school, Orestes Canning Company, Orestes Grain Elevator, Kelly Axe Factory, Mt. Pisgah School completely destroyed. Miraculously the death toll was not higher.

A meeting was held at the Charles Davis General Store last night and by unanimous vote, those in attendance wanted it to go on record that they wanted the Orestes School to be rebuilt or a new one erected in Orestes. A committee was formed to inform the Monroe Township Advisory Board of the feelings here. The committee members are: I.E. Wilson, C.F. Welborn, A.B. Custer, and Don Garner.

Five killed as Ford Touring car is struck by an eastbound traction passenger car at Rangeline Crossing. Motorman George Horton of Tipton was cut by flying glass and Conductor Russell Hahn of Tipton was uninjured. Two others were injured quite badly and perhaps would not live.

Emil Johnson meets sudden death. Emil Johnson was killed at the U.T.C. crossing at the east edge of Orestes this morning when an eastbound freight smashed into his touring car. Mr. Johnson was a bit late and was in a hurry to make up lost time. Mrs. Johnson heard the crash and came running from their home nearby. Mr. Johnson died in her arms.

Many persons escaped injury today as the 1:30 p.m. car for Tipton split a switch at Harrison and Washington in Alexandria as the car pulled from the station. The car was heading north and the front trucks cleared the switch and the rear trucks split east swinging the rear end around and snapping a telephone pole at the Rothinghouse Drug Store corner.
